This week I have been thinking a lot about my two grandfathers, who were born on the 18th and 19th January.
One was a professor and quite famous at the time. He was an expert in his field, loved science and was a great presenter and teacher. I call him my SMART grandfather.
My other grandfather ran a shop in town and lived next door to us when I was young. He was quiet, a very good listener and gave really good advice. I call him my WISE grandfather.
I see reflections of both of them in me and it made me realize how much my (grand)parents have formed what I value, what I focus on and what I believe in.
My SMART self is analytical, rational, and focuses on data and facts. All are very important to be successful when you work in the life science industry.
My WISE self is aware of what motivates me, understands my beliefs that are holding me back and how to deal with these. It helps me to make things happen and to maximize my impact.
Most of us do not often slow down and reflect on this. We simply do not make time for it and may even fear the process. However, in my experience, the best performers are both SMART and WISE.
If you want to get better at being WISE, you may benefit from a coach that can support and guide you on this journey.
